A one-room school house
In 1977, Port Republic School Number 7’s old school bell rang out once more, and the little one-room school house, filled with its memories and memorabilia, was ready for visitors. It is now one of the county’s tourist attractions.

Calvert County has a 100-acre nature sanctuary that recalls a time some 100,000 years ago when cypress swamps were common over large parts of the region and now-extinct animals like mammoths roamed the landscape. As you walk on the quarter-mile boardwalk trail, listen to nature’s harmony of calling frogs and songbirds, examine the intricate beauty of seasonal wildflowers or just gaze up at the inspiring 100-foot canopy of cypress trees that can reach an age of over 1,000 years.
